Albans Lakes
Match Lake
I was recently reminded why I didn’t like fishing in the colder months. If you are not catching fish it’s cold and boring and pretty pointless. Not at this venue though, most commercial fisheries will fish well most of the year but how you fish them does change. Light tackle, more patience and certain methods will produce fish in the colder months.
I have never fished the Match Lake at Albans Lakes, it has a busy schedule and I have turned up a couple of times and the lake has been busy. Before a third visit, I called the fishery manager to check the availability on my chosen day, don’t assume the website Calendar is up to date!
I parked up near the tackle shop and popped in to pay for my day ticket and ask about how it was fishing. The tackle shop although not big by tackle shop standards was well stocked, less empty spaces than my local Angling Direct!
I was advised on where to fish and how to fish, so all I had to do was get the the lake, set up and start fishing. The Method feeder was the way I planned to fish, although at this venue the slow sinking bomb is the method used in many matches (when allowed).
I soaked some 2mm pellets and added some Sonubaits Haze Banofee for more flavour and colour. On the hook, I used a 6mm Hookable Expander. Clipped up to the middle, around 25 meters and the far bank, 50 meters. I was using a Preston Extremity Feeder reel in 520 size which has 2 clips and an 11m N-Zon Feeder Rod rated to 50gr. I was casting a 30gr ICS method feeder.
I started fishing at the 25-meter mark, a couple of quick baiting casts, left for a couple of minutes and I settled in for what I expected to be a slow start. I was wrong and was into fish straight away, carp up to 5lb and a bonus Skimmer of around 2lb. I carried on catching here, only leaving the feeder in for a maximum of 15 minutes. I caught regularly for around 90 minutes then things slowed down. With 2 casts and no fish, I changed tactics.
I cast out to my far side clip, changing the method feeder to a 45gr hybrid feeder as I was not always hitting the clip at 30gr. I also prefer the hybrid for longer casts, I just have more confidence the bait will get to the bottom.
I had seen signs of fish here but no bites in the first 30 minutes so I moved away from the bank a couple of meters to the deeper water and changed bait to a yellow 8mm wafter. This proved to be the right thing to do and I was into another Carp, Around 4lb which took a little while to get in because of the extra distance. I stayed on this line for about an hour but it wasn’t as good as the middle earlier.
I had seen some fish under the platform I was fishing on so tried 30 mins under arming to about 10 meters. I had a couple of bites here but didn’t hook into anything, maybe line bites? So it was back to the middle with the hookable expander for the last hour which although slower still bought me a few more carp and skimmers, the biggest skimmer around 3lb.
I packed up the tackle around 2 pm and headed back to the car and home for a warm shower and some tea.
Conclusion
It certainly was colder on this fishing trip, with misty breath, and the maximum temperature hit around 10 C, it was nice though when the sun came out. It’s going to get colder than this though, I can’t wait!
Albans Lakes didn’t disappoint though and proved to fish like I hoped a mid-sized commercial lake would and still there were some nice carp and skimmers to be caught. I am hoping all my cold-weather fishing proves as successful as it was at Albans Lakes today. I will revisit in a month or so to see how the extra cold affects things but if you are looking for some fish this cold season you can’t go wrong at Albans Lakes. Just ring ahead first for availability.
